Great Historical Moments

It’s a catchcry that’s immortalised forever in the minds of Australian sporting fans. If you loved footy as a kid, there’s a chance you joyfully took an epic mark off your mate’s shoulder shouting in your yet-to-be broken voice these famous words....

Oh Jesaulenko, you beauty!

While every AFL fan has heard this iconic phrase, there are some who know little about this moment and the man who made it. Acclaimed as ‘The Mark of the Century’ by the AFL, Alex Jesaulenko popularised the ‘specky’ in the 1970 Grand Final against Collingwood, when he took a mark over giant ruckman, Graeme Jenkin. The phrase worked itself into popular use from being named the first Mark of the Year, a medal awarded each year after 1970 and named after Jesaulenko himself.

Though very few people know Alex Jesaulenko’s fascinating upbringing and family history. Born in Austria, his father was German policeman during World War II and his Russian mother survived a German prison camp. She gave birth in this camp to a son that she also called Alex, who was taken away by SS soldiers. He wouldn’t reappear until 1994, after the family presumed he was dead.

Amid the mayhem of post-WWII Europe, his parents met and settled in Salzburg, Austria. Four years later, his family left for Australia and settled in Canberra where he began his football career at Eastlake under his coach, none other than Ron Barassi.

He played his first VFL match with Carlton in 1967 then transferred to St Kilda in 1980 in a deal personally managed by transport billionaire and club president, Lindsay Fox. He was the Buddy Franklin of the seventies. Can you picture Buddy with a long and luscious 70’s mullet?

Jokes aside, it’s so important to capture sporting greatness with memorabilia. If you want a piece of sports history in your home, get in touch with HT Framing &Memorabilia today.

Easter

Our Easter celebration went really well. Had a great time with Steven's family.

We Talked about it

Contribution by German Flowers

My husband and I discussed Riverside Satellite TV at length and ultimately decided when we moved we need to give the kids something to be excited about. We were already asking them to give up all their friends and stuff and we knew they were going to be exceedingly sad so we thought that satellite TV with lots of channels would be a good way to bring them joy. We have to take this job because my husband is being promoted within his company which is a good thing but it got me moving halfway across the country which is clearly stressing the kids out. Our oldest is actually just starting high school and I knew she was really nervous because not only will she be a freshman, she will be new in town, too. My kids are really strong though and I know if anyone can assimilate in this new situation is them. They are really wonderful kids and I am fully confident we will get through this as a family like we always do.

Realtors

Thanks for the post, Arthur Lawrence

I am a residential realtor, and I work in a firm with other realtors. We’ve been together in business for over 10 years now, and we’ve done quite well, even in this economy. We have become very large, with lots of properties listed with us at any given time. We try to find buyers and sellers for one another, so in that way we really do work together. Occasionally we have to find a property outside of our company for one of our buyers, but we have so many listings between us that this is actually quite rare. At our last meeting as a team, we discussed the company’s future and ways we need to grow. We are looking into ways to link all of our properties more efficiently in our database, and someone mentioned looking into getting San Diego T1. I’m all for that because I know that we need the latest technology and best internet available if we are going to continue to meet the demands of our clients and the community.

AMERICA'S CASTLES

Guest post of the week by Deangelo Spencer

The other day I watched a really great television series on my Dish TV. I saw two episodes of the series and can’t wait to see some more. The series is called, “America’s Castles”. The show highlights some of the most famous homes in America. The first one I saw was on the “Hearst Castle” in San Simeon, California. The home was absolutely amazing and looked more like a cathedral on top of the hill. The newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearst, built the home in the roaring twenties. It was the meeting place and party place for the who’s who of society. He entertained royalty, actors, and politicians. The home was decorated beautifully. There were so many beautiful antiques through out the home. Most of them were imported from Europe. The home has the famous “Neptune Pool” that was brought in piece by piece from Italy. It is absolutely stunning. I guess it was the era of no income tax and extravagance for America. Some of the countries most beautiful homes were built then. I wish I could visit them!
